Thoughts On: ‘Invictus’

poem

Poetry isn’t my forte, I am not a poetry master or lover however, occasionally I do find a poem I can appreciate. I discovered Invictus by William Ernest Henley while I was watching the film of the same name. Though poorly executed I enjoyed the film but it was this poem that really got to me. It is a poem about fighting adversity, that no matter what happens, no matter how badly you are treated, you can not be beaten. A beautiful message.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I love this poem. It’s so incredibly powerful.

I don’t think I have a single favorite poem. I love the work of Pablo Neruda and that of Mary Oliver. I’ve found different things speak to me at different times in my life.

This poem is beautiful with a fabulous and powerful message.
Poetry isn’t really my forte either but I can find the occasional poem to appreciate like yourself. I don’t really have a favourite poem for that reason I guess.

That is such a precious poem.
I just know a few poets and yet I can’t choose one. This is one of my absolutely favourites by Walt Whitman (scroll down till the 1st answer): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080125021811AAPVsPY
I have it printed in my room, love it.

By the way, is Invictus any good? It looks pretty interesting, I’m thinking about going to the movies…

I think it is worth seeing, even just for the story. It’s a wonderful tale of uniting South Africa, and it’s a true story. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it.

What a powerful and inspiring poem. I love poetry but I never remember them. Is the movie any good?

I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it. It is definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

I have very little interest in poems, but do come across the occasional stanzas that I can come to appreciate. I remember studying poetry in my Literature class, and Sylvia Plath has some interesting (though depressing) ones I’d like, lol.
